Do Penny Black ao Olho de Boi

Abstract

The construction of the Brazilian State in the nineteenth century required the installation of an administrative machine capable of expanding government authority all over the country. Given the importance of public services for the consolidation of markets and national states, the doctoral research that I am about to present seeks to contribute to economic history by analyzing some institutional and financial aspects that characterized Brazilian postal reforms between 1829 and 1844. Based on postal regulations and the reports of the Minister of the Empire, I intend to demonstrate that the improvement of the Brazilian postal system reflected, not only the different experiences of public administration, but also the different concepts of monarchy and state building.
