Abstract
The present work aims to carry out an assessment of the manufacturing sector based on documentation of the Court of the Board of Trade, Agriculture, Factories, and Navigation. The period between the permission to establish factories in Brazil and the last year of the Court's operation, in 1850, was one of effervescence in the industrial sector. Using quantitative data, we observe Brazilian industries that came into contact with the State in order to request protection. What were these factories? What were the main productive sectors? What were the changes in the sectors privileged by the State over time?
