Abstract

Interest rates have been present in the economy and society for thousands of years. With the development of the so-called market economy, interest becomes a variable that can be theoretically analyzed by a more autonomous or specialized area of knowledge - economics, as happened with other variables in other areas of knowledge and science. This article aims to analyze the inflation targeting system, as well as its possible applications and practical implications for monetary policy in Brazil. Above all, it seeks to present and analyze the reasons most frequently given to explain the fact that Brazil has had, for decades, the highest interest rates in the world.
