Abstract

Technical standardization comprise activities such as metrology, calibration, certification, voluntary standards and mandatory standards. This article aims at retracing the institutional history of standardization in Brazil, beginning with the creation and transformation of the main public and private organisms related to these activities. The Brazilian experience in technical standardization reveals a model based on strong state intervention whose evolution has led to the creation of a systemic conception of public-private governance through the Sistema Nacional de Metrologia (Sinmetro). The governance of technical standardization in Brazil, want effectiveness due to the lack of organization among competing interests.
