Of continental proportions Brazil looked predominantly inwords throughout most of the second half of the twentieth century. Import substitution and autarky dominated thinking accross the political spectrum. Over the past decade the outlook changed dramatically with both the “left” and the “right” searching outside for new ideas and for material fulfillment. Historians and economists seek to understand the world including areas with which Brazil had little previous contact. Today South Korea and India may be role models and are ot least "benchmarks" for Brazil.
Meanwhile Brazil, which led the world in economic growth for a number of decades, and which recently overcame near hyperinfiation, has something to tell the rest of the world.
We view História e Economia as a multilingual forum for both Brazilian and international scholars. We also see our journal as a means by which Brazilian researchers communicate the Brazilian experience to acodemics and other interested parties abroad.
